2001 Wisconsin Governor's Humanities Award

On October 12, 2001, “The Esperanza Project” was awarded the Governor's Humanities Award for Excellence in Public Humanities Programming. The award read: “The ‘Esperanza’ Project, led by Karlos Moser, was a multi-faceted arts and humanities project centered on the writing and production of a new American opera, “Esperanza”. The opera is based on a true story of Mexican American workers in New Mexico, and is drawn from the film “Salt of the Earth”. The opera and its surrounding activities prompted interaction among history enthusiasts, opera buffs, Latino/a activists, women's history specialists, union members, and a large public audience that was unusually diverse in class and ethnicity.”
